Sprouts vs. Walmart

I needed to go grocery shopping yesterday, but instead of heading straight to my usual Walmart I decided to check out Sprouts first. Sprouts is closer to us than Whole Foods, and I had hoped that it would be a little better since it's a smaller company. Whole Foods seems to be getting pretty big. That's not always a bad thing, but in the case of healthy and local food, national chains don't always come through. Sprouts is currently limited to CA, AZ, TX, and CO, whereas Whole Foods is all over the country (and Canada and the UK).

First Taste of Bison

I finally cooked up some of the grass-fed ground bison meat I bought a couple weeks ago. I made Hamburger Helper, which I know is not very healthy, but it's what we had. A quick peek at the nutritional information on the side of the box reveals several mystery ingredients. Eventually I'm hoping to make a healthier homemade version of Hamburger Helper, but I'm not there yet.

Disappearing Leaves

We had been trying to wait until the trees in our yard drop all their leaves before raking them up. Unfortunately, that's taking forever, and we needed to clean up the mess sooner. Some of our neighbors had been out raking leaves a few weeks ago. It seemed like the leaves were blowing off our property and contaminating the other clean lawns all around us. I felt like the neighborhood was eyeballing us because we were "those people." Those people who never maintain their yard. That's not true, though. We do try to take care of the yard.

Grass-Fed Bison Meat: Packing Date Unknown

One of the first challenges I came across after deciding to eat healthier was the problem of where to find food. Eating organic and local is a great idea, but I really didn't know how to go about procuring this type of cuisine. The first idea that came to mind was a local farmer's market. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of anything close, and I thought I had heard that farmer's markets close down during the winter. I'm not sure if that's entirely true, but I definitely wanted to find sources that were available year-round.

First Post

First post. Welcome. Check out the About page to get some background info if you'd like. I'm not here to focus on greenwashing itself, or to tell you how bad you are for not recycling. I'm basically just recording some of my experiments and experiences with trying to live healthier and in a more sustainable way. I do feel greenwashed in a certain sense, though. With a lot of the supposedly environmentally friendly actions I take, it's hard to grasp the full impact that they have. Did I really do something "better" or does it just feel that way?
